For the last 35 years, on the first weekend of August, the Castle gets "alive" again. Music, shows, traditional dances and food are part of the cultural event "Gynaikokastreia" which has become one of the leading cultural events of Kilkis. In "Platania", under the shadow of the castle -which is especially lighted during the event- the visitors have the opportunity to watch dance groups from Greece, Italy, Spain, Egypt, Estonia, Bulgaria, Serbia and other countries, theatrical performances, academic lectures and writers, participate in children's events with clowns, jugglers and stilt walkers.
There are also painting, folklore and crafts exhibiotions, the annual children's painting contest, traditional dishes and feasts until dawn. It is in fact a cultural weekend organized for the first time in 1981 and was dedicated to Peace. However, in 1984 the establishment of the Cultural Association of Palaio Gynaikokastro, changed the name of the event to "Gynaikokastreia".
